Chelsea Clinton and husband Marc Mezvinsky are expecting their first child this fall, the former First Daughter, 34, announced Thursday while speaking at an event in New York City for the Clinton Foundation’s No Ceilings: The Full Participation Project, which seeks to empower women globally.

“Marc and I are very excited that we have our first child arriving later this year,” she said. “I certainly feel all the better whether it’s a girl or a boy that she or he will grow up in world filled with so many strong female leaders.” The daughter of Hillary and President Bill Clinton, Chelsea and Mezvinsky were married in 2010.
“Thank you for all of the kind words!” she Tweeted following the event. Her parents soon chimed in. “Excited to add a new line to my Twitter bio … grandfather-to-be! Hillary and I are so happy for Chelsea and Marc,” Bill wrote, while Hillary added, “My most exciting title yet: Grandmother-To-Be!” Chelsea has been vocal about her desire to have kids.
In October, she told Glamour she hoped to have a baby this year. “We want, God willing, to start a family. So we decided to make 2014 the Year of the Baby,” she said. “And please call my mother and tell her that.”
Hillary, 66, and Bill, 67, should be relieved – the political parents slyly pushed their daughter to procreate, she told Rachael Ray in the same month. “There is completely unapologetic pressure. In private and in public,” she joked.
“If one of my parents were sitting here, they would tell you without blinking an eye that it would make them the happiest thing on earth if I were to make them grandparents, and they would say it so effusively, and I would feel a bit of pressure.”
“We’re just thrilled,” Mezvinsky’s mother Marjorie Margolies, who is running for her old congressional seat in Pennsylvania’s 13th district, tells PEOPLE.
“There are 18 grandchildren on this side of the family so he or she is going to have a lot of cousins and they’ll be very pleased,” she says, adding that the last grandchild was born just five months ago.
Marc broke the news to her “like any normal, carbon-based homo sapien” does it,” she jokes. “He called me and said, ‘Chelsea’s pregnant.’”
The former president was just in town for a fundraiser for Margolies last week, but she was mum about whether they talked grandchildren. “It was just wonderful,” she says of the fundraiser.
“He’s a rock star and people were just thrilled to see him.”
“I am ecstatic,” he told reporters Thursday afternoon.
