Mel Gibson Shows Off Wild Facial Hair And Unkempt Hair As He Leaves Gym In LA

The days of being a Hollywood heartthrob seem to be well and truly behind Mel Gibson.

It's hard to believe the 58-year-old actor once topped 'sexiest man alive' polls as he left an LA gym on Monday sporting a bushy silver beard and unkempt hair.

The Lethal Weapon star drew stares as he sauntered down the street after his gym session. Most fans of the actor would be hard-pressed to recognise him these days.

Perhaps he can be forgiven for looking a little disheveled; all-but the most image-conscious of A-listers would dress up to the nines to go to the gym.

But he could put in a little bit of effort, surely?

Mel looked like he had completed an exhausting workout as he hobbled back to his car, wearing a checked shirt, black shorts and trainers.

He was no-doubt working on his physique before going on the road to promote The Expendables 3, his latest action extravaganza.

Mel is one of the new recruits, alongside Kellen Lutz and Harrison Ford, who join cast regulars Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Statham and Dolph Lundgren.

His character, Conrad Stonebanks, is the main antagonist in the new film - and he stares from the movie poster in a black jacket and jeans, reminiscent of his Lethal Weapon days.

But there is no beard on display, which adds mystery to his choice of facial hair. IMDb.com does not list a new film in the works for Mel, so he may actually like looking that way.

GIbson's star fell to earth in 2006 after he was arrested for driving while drunk. During his arrest he made anti-Semitic comments that put him in the Hollywood wilderness.

His career has not fully recovered, and it is hoped that this new Expendables film - surrounded by other Hollywood luminaries - may resurrect his star power.

The original film came out it 2010 and grossed over $100 million. While the 2012 sequel, raked in $85 million.

To find out what happens in The Expendables 3 you'll have to wait until the summer, when it opens in cinemas on August 15, 2014.

New role: He is playing bad-guy arms dealer Conrad Stonebanks in the forthcoming Expendables sequel
